This has echoes of WMD [1]. Although there is no international emergency, policy is being hi-jacked. The real problem is that an industry (a) coverts a captive market for an ever expanding list of products and (b) is ever more fearful of coming under public scrutiny, which it could not remotely survive in its present form. It is not a given that all the critical information circulating is "unreliable, misleading and unscientific". The industry and its proponents hide behind bland assurances that everything is safe, effective, carefully tested etc. but the reality is messy [2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11, 12, 13,14,15].

As a matter of history the present initiative would seem to go back to a meeting at the White House under President Barack Obama in September 2014. An Italian Government press release of the time relates [16]:

"Washington, 29 September 2014 - Italy will lead vaccination strategies and campaigns in the world over the next five years. This was decided by the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) held last Friday at the White House. Our country, represented by the Minister of Health Beatrice Lorenzin, accompanied by the President of the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) prof. Sergio Pecorelli, has been commissioned by the Summit of 40 Countries, at which also spoke US President Barack Obama...."

But while this was widely known to demonstrators in Italy it has never been reported by mainstream sources. As has been seen this has already led to massive political upheavels in Italy itself where the major gainers in the recent national elections were the two parties pledged to repeal the punitive vaccine mandates introduced by Lorenzin in the last government.

We also saw that it led to a rather phoney debate in this country last year, where effectively all vaccine critics were demonised in the mainstream media and labelled "anti-vaxxers" [17]. Meanwhile, what was noticeable in the Rapid Response of BMJ columns was the absence of proponents of vaccine mandates willing to answer their critics [18,19].

Even at this late stage the European Parliament would be wise to hold back from supporting oppressive measures by EU member governments.
