A new, drug resistant subtype of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is responsible for a surge in new cases of AIDS in the Philippines, the country’s leading virologist has said.

Although the number of new HIV cases each year has been declining globally, the Philippines has bucked that trend, and the increase in new cases is accelerating.
