Winter pressure: government responses across UK

Health services across the UK have been facing unprecedented pressure in the past week. Chaand Nagpaul, chair of the BMA’s council, described the NHS as “congested and overstretched,” adding, “We urgently need more long term planning to ensure the NHS can meet rising demand on services and has the capacity to deal with the inevitable spike in demand each winter.”

His call was echoed by Jane Dacre, president of the Royal College of Physicians. “Our physician members . . . have told us that the NHS is in a state of perennial winter,” she said. “We need long term solutions, not short term fixes.”
