NHS publishes estimates of avoidable deaths in hospitals

The NHS will publish estimates of “avoidable” deaths in hospitals as part of a drive by the health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, to improve patient safety by delivering greater transparency.

NHS trusts will publish their own quarterly estimates of the number of deaths in their organisation resulting from problems in care. The government said that 171 of the 223 NHS trusts in England had released their first estimates or would do so by the end of December.

The data will not be comparable and will not be collated centrally, as they rely on self reporting from trusts. But Hunt said that their publication would enable trusts to focus on learning …
