Born in Berlin, Nils Albert Regan arrived in London with his family in 1936. He was educated at King’s College School in Wimbledon and Aberdeen University, following his father into medicine. After qualifying he did his national service in the Royal Air Force and spent two years stationed at RAF Hospital Rinteln, working in obstetrics and gynaecology. On his return to London, he continued in the specialty at West Middlesex, gaining his MRCOG in 1956, followed by a year’s service at the American Services Hospital in Ruislip.
