Radiologist convicted of fraud is suspended for 12 months

A consultant radiologist who was convicted of fraud over NHS overtime claims has been suspended for 12 months by a medical practitioners tribunal.

The judge who gave John Coffey a suspended sentence of 15 months’ imprisonment told him at his trial that “there is little doubt that your career as a doctor is likely to be finished.” But a panel of the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service opted instead for the maximum period of suspension from the medical register.
