Peter Joseph Wilkinson Monks was born in Warrington, Cheshire, and studied medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London. His preclinical training was relocated to Cambridge during the war. He was a medical student and junior doctor during the second world war, treating casualties of the London Blitz and experiencing direct bombing of the hospital itself. After the war, in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, he met and married Phyl (Phyllis), a young officer in the WRNS.
