US doctor is shot dead after refusing to prescribe opioids

A man whose wife was denied opioids for her claimed pain condition stalked and murdered the treating physician before killing himself in Mishawaka, Indiana, authorities have said.

Michael Jarvis, 48, shot and killed Todd Graham, 56, a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist, hours after accompanying his wife to her first visit as a new patient. Petra Jarvis had asked Graham to prescribe opioids, but he refused, telling her that he did not believe them to be an appropriate treatment for most chronic pain, said Ken Cotter, St Joseph County prosecutor.
