Michael Hobsley was born in Calcutta, India, and grew up there. He left India at the age of 16 to read natural sciences at Cambridge University but discovered medicine and switched his studies. While working as a houseman at Chase Farm Hospital, he met registrar Jane Cambell, whom he married in 1953, becoming the devoted father to four children and grandfather to six.
After two years in the Royal Army Medical Corps in Germany and Belgium, Michael worked as a registrar at the Middlesex hospital and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1958. Training posts included five years in surgical …
