John Moorhouse Heaton started his professional life as an ophthalmologist. He spent two years in the Royal Air Force as a medical officer and became acting squadron leader. He introduced an innovative psychological treatment for pilots with stress induced eye strain. His first book was The Eye (1968), on the phenomenology of vision.
