The number of patients with mental disorders who are being sent out of area for treatment has risen by almost 40% in the past two years, with some sent more than 500 miles away from home, according to figures uncovered by the British Medical Association.
The BMA sent out freedom of information requests to all 54 mental health trusts and all clinical commissioning groups in England.
