David Burns Moffat was born in Swansea to non-medical parents (his father was a master tailor and sometime powerboat racer). He duly attended Swansea Grammar School before starting his medical studies at Barts in 1939. The 2nd MB course was then relocated to Queens’ College, Cambridge. Typically for the time, the course was greatly contracted—so 46 weeks of teaching was crammed into a single calendar year.
With wartime constraints and the desperate need for qualified doctors, the final conjoint exam was taken after just two and a half years of clinical training, so David qualified MRCP LRCP in April 1943, at the age …
