John Richard Newton obtained his membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists within five years of qualifying, collecting the Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital Board of Governors research prize along the way. His love for research continued throughout his career and resulted in the publication of 231 peer reviewed papers, 92 other published papers as senior author, six books, and numerous book chapters. John was awarded the Lawson Tait chair of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Birmingham in January 1979 and held it until he retired on 1 August 2000.
