Former Guyanese health minister sentenced in US for illegal prescribing

A Long Island doctor has been sentenced to 50 months’ imprisonment for illegal prescribing of oxycodone. Noel Blackman, 69, is a former health minister of Guyana and a former executive member of the World Health Organization.

Until his arrest, Blackman was also dean of academic affairs at the Georgetown American University medical school in Guyana.

He was arrested a year ago, on a Guyana bound plane waiting to take off from New York’s John F Kennedy Airport. Police found $30 000 (£23 100, €26 800) in cash hidden in his luggage. Wascar Castillo, Blackman’s office manager, was charged last year and sentenced to 36 months …
