Edwin George Gerald Roberts (“Gerry”) was born in Crosskeys, Monmouthshire. He graduated BSc from the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire before entering medical school. After several resident junior hospital posts in hospitals across south Wales, he returned to Cardiff as registrar in paediatrics to Professor A G (“Pop”) Watkins and was subsequently appointed by the Welsh Regional Hospital Board as the consultant paediatrician at Wrexham in 1950. He was the first paediatrician to be appointed to the Wrexham General Hospital, but his duties initially covered the whole of north Wales—a responsibility he shared with a Bangor based paediatrician, Gwyn Griffith, until Muriel McClean was appointed to Rhyl in 1958.
