Nicholas Wright (“Nick”) was born in Newcastle upon Tyne. At the age of 7 he was sent as a wartime evacuee to the Lake District, moving between multiple billets. His life improved when he entered the Newcastle Royal Grammar School at its wartime location in Penrith, and he later won a county major scholarship to Cambridge. He enjoyed acting and joined St Thomas’ Hospital as a medical student in 1953, during the golden years of the Christmas pantomime. He took the title role in Cinderella, written by Michael O’Donnell (formerly of the Cambridge Footlights and later editor of World Medicine).
Nick was a house surgeon at St Thomas’ annexe at Hydestile in Surrey, where he enjoyed tennis. Subsequently he was a house physician in Reading, for the Honourable Alastair Anderson (whose father, Viscount Waverley, gave his name to the Anderson …
