Medical professionals need knowledge in marketing skills and business administration Re: Applying for an MBA as a doctor: what to consider
We read with interest and sincerely appreciated the insightful professional guidance delivered by the authors to support junior doctors who are planning to explore business opportunities in the field of medicine (1). The global health care market is wide open for medical professionals with additional knowledge in marketing and business administration.
Several multispecialty hospitals, polyclinics, health centers, laboratories, and diagnostic centers have been established all over the world with high-end investments. Currently several private medical schools, veterinary schools, nursing schools, and allied health science schools show promising business opportunities. Meanwhile worldwide business opportunities in the field of medical tourism is catching up at a rapid space.
Presently most of these health care organizations and training schools are operated by corporate business Institutes with support from medical experts as employees or consultants.
It is high time that medical professionals obtain BBA, MBA qualifications and explore the wide open global market of health related industries.
Current market is looking for medical professionals with added experiences in business administration, project management, etc. Pre-medical science degree courses blended with BBA or MBA degree courses may open new horizons for new generation students having expertise in information technology, aptitude in business projects and qualification in basic medical sciences. It is a platform for a definitive career transition into an entirely non-clinical role, such as management consultancy (1).
Conclusion: In present day practice, medical professionals need cutting edge acumen to study market trends, design highly productive business projects to attract financial support from commercial banks or other corporate organizations to venture innovative areas in various health care industries.
Hence, we applaud the author’s comment: “Master of business administration (MBA) programmes are not to be undertaken lightly: they are intense and fast paced and more expensive than other postgraduate qualifications” (1).
