National agency has “transformed” UK clinical research

The United Kingdom’s position as a world leader in clinical research and development has been restored over the past decade thanks to the national body set up to enhance research, a new report claims.1

The review, published to mark the 10th anniversary of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), praised its achievements in funding and supporting “world leading” clinical and applied health and social care research, as well as research infrastructure in the NHS.

The institute provides £1bn (€1.29bn; $1.46bn) of funding each year to support research and the NHS research infrastructure, with various aims including faster translation of new treatments, technologies, and diagnostics to improve outcomes for health and care services.
