Tobacco companies lose legal challenge on standardised packaging

Tobacco multinationals have failed to block a European directive mandating standardised packaging for tobacco products across Europe.
The European Court of Justice ruled on 4 May that the European tobacco directive 2014, which states that health warnings must cover 65% of the front and back of a cigarette pack sold in the single market, is lawful.1
The court also held that the directive allows European Union member states to go further and introduce extra measures on packaging that are not harmonised by the directive. This would include a UK law, due to come into force in May 2017, allowing cigarettes …
