Rapid responses are electronic letters to the editor. They enable our users to debate issues raised in articles published on thebmj.com. Although a selection of rapid responses will be included online and in print as readers' letters, their first appearance online means that they are published articles. If you need the url (web address) of an individual response, perhaps for citation purposes, simply click on the response headline and copy the url from the browser window. Letters are indexed in PubMed.
Diets are a riot. There are many popular diets, but none of them seem to work. They all leave us hungry and weak, not satisfied or strong. What is a healthy diet?
A healthy diet is nutritious food that excludes toxins and addictions, because toxins and addictions are common, covert causes of sickness, both physical and emotional. Toxins, like pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides, don’t belong in our diet. The same is true for addictions, like honey, sweets, chocolate, vanilla, cola, coffee, tea, alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. What should we eat?
We should eat organic food and follow a lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet. Organic food (which excludes chemicals) minimizes toxins, and a lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet (which excludes meat, chicken, and fish) minimizes our cravings for addictions. The result is an organic, addiction-free Lacto-Ovo-VEgetarian diet, which I call the “LOVE Diet," my acronymic recipe for health, both physical and emotional.
In review, the LOVE Diet is an organic, addiction-free lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet that excludes meat, chicken, and fish, but includes whole milk, cheese, butter, eggs, fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, nuts, and seeds. Beans, nuts, and seeds replace meat, chicken, and fish with more nutrition and less hunger or addiction. Delicious and nutritious, and free from addiction's cravings and ravings, the LOVE Diet is a recipe for peace and health.
The opposite of the LOVE Diet (nutrition) is the “HATE Diet” (addiction). The HATE Diet (Honey, Alcohol, Tobacco, Espresso) is a non-organic diet that includes meat, chicken, fish, and addictions. Addicting and afflicting with cravings and ravings, the HATE Diet is a recipe for conflict and sickness. Choose LOVE, not HATE.
Healthcare is hell. The more we get, the worse we feel. There are 24 medical specialties and 88 sub-specialties. How can we choose, afford, or survive so much healthcare?
There are three kinds of healthcare: traditional medicine, alternative medicine, and complementary medicine. Complementary medicine (integrative medicine) combines traditional medicine with alternative medicine. All three kinds of healthcare use drugs.
Traditional medicine uses prescription drugs, such as antibiotics, tranquilizers, vaccines, and chemotherapy. Alternative medicine uses over-the-counter drugs, such as vitamins, minerals, herbs, and enzymes. Complementary medicine uses both prescription and over-the-counter drugs. So all healthcare uses drugs, and patients have no real alternatives.
Drugs are a mixed blessing. They prolong life, but they also shorten it. This is because drugs are toxins and addictions that fool and block our body's biochemistry. This is why drugs have so many serious side effects and adverse reactions. In contrast, nutritious food, which is free of toxins and addictions, fuels and builds our body’s biochemistry. This is why food is live medicine, but medicine is dead food. So healthcare needs selfcare.
