Hunt promises to investigate claims of mental health trust’s failure over unexpected deaths

The health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has pledged to investigate allegations that a mental health trust in England failed to properly investigate the unexpected deaths of more than 1000 people.

The intervention came after a leaked report1 examining unexpected deaths at Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust found that some cases in which patients with mental health illness and learning disabilities had died had not been fully examined owing to a “failure of leadership” at the trust.
