Allan Llewellyn Warlow

Allan Llewellyn Warlow was a respected general practitioner, who experienced the early years of the NHS in south Wales and went on to practise on the island of Guernsey.

Born in Porth, in the Rhondda Valley, the youngest of three children, he survived childhood polio, the Depression, and the outbreak of war to enrol as a medical student in Charing Cross Hospital in London. The war was still on as he began his studies, and the hospital was evacuated to Birmingham and then to the grounds of Chaulden House in Hertfordshire. He remembered nights spent on fire watch on the hospital roof as German air raids went on and accompanying hospital trains helping to tend wounded soldiers.

After the medical school had returned to its central London location in 1947 (well before its move to Hammersmith), he qualified in general practice. He completed national service in the …
