William Paul Butt, who died in September, was pre-eminent in musculoskeletal radiology, initially in his native Canada, then later in the UK and Europe after his move to Leeds in 1979.

He described his childhood background as one of poverty; this became the uncompromising driving force behind his striving for education and his thirst for knowledge. He worked in a supermarket to finance his medical training, qualifying in Toronto in 1959. His radiology training in the mid 1960s included fellowships in London, Oxford, Edinburgh, and Gothenburg; during this period he was admitted as a fellow of the Faculty of Radiologists, as the royal college was then styled. Appointed to the staff of Montreal General Hospital, he developed particular expertise in skeletal radiology, publishing on discography and other spine related topics.
