Summary Hospital -level Mortality Indicator (SHMI) published by Health and Social Care Information Centre (hscic) on 29 april 2015 indicates that Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the 9 trusts (out of 137) with a consistently ‘lower than expected’ SHMI ..
But Care Quality Commission (CQC) which inspected the trust around the same time (April/May 2015) placed the trust in special measures after judging it “inadequate”. CQC reports that patient safety is being compromised..
Clearly the two conclusions are incompatible. I suspect that if you apply a 'Friends and Family test’, most NHS staff in United Kingdom would be happy for their friends and family to be treated in Cambridge. . We urgently need a better system for rating quality of care at NHS hospitals.
