Paul Yate’s working life as an anaesthetist was based around the London Hospital. He trained there, was appointed senior lecturer in 1984, and became a consultant in 1988. He also spent time during his training at Great Ormond Street Hospital, Chelmsford Hospital, and in the Seychelles. As a consultant he specialised at different times in cardiac anaesthesia, neuroanaesthesia, intensive care, and acute pain. He was appointed clinical director in 2002. His interest in research continued throughout his career, and he produced many papers. He was also very interested in trainees and was responsible for the primary course at the London for many years. He fully retired in 2014, having dealt with a long term illness with great courage. Outside anaesthetics he was a sailor, worldwide traveller, and an opera and art enthusiast.

Paul leaves his wife, Geraldine; two daughters; and two grandchildren.
