Royal college calls on hospitals to tackle emergency department “exit block” to hospital beds

“Exit block,” when patients cannot be moved from a hospital emergency department into a hospital bed, is a growing problem that needs to be tackled urgently, the Royal College of Emergency Medicine has said.
Its report says that exit block raises patient mortality, increases patients’ length of stay in hospital, delays time critical interventions, and is associated with a higher risk of adverse events.1
