Seven day GP access scheme in Yorkshire is abandoned owing to lack of demand

BMJ 2015; 350 doi: https://doi.org/10.1136/bmj.h3279 (Published 16 June 2015) Cite this as: BMJ 2015;350:h3279

Rapid Response:

Evidence-free policy

Seven day access to GP surgeries is an evidence-free policy, dreamed up purely to sound good and capture votes. Anyone objecting could be denounced as resisting modernisation (we can shop in Tesco's all round the clock), or for not putting patients' interests first. The discussions on local radio (BBC Radio Bristol) have been pathetic (in the sense 'miserably inadequate'): any doctor saying that there wasn't demand being condemned for not wanting to work. Now we have evidence for what most of us have thought all along. I wonder what the Government's response will be?
