White House forum promotes responsible use of antibiotics

The Obama administration hosted a forum at the White House on 2 June to promote the responsible use of antibiotics in healthcare and agriculture to slow the emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria and prevent the spread of drug resistant infections.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now estimates that drug resistant bacteria cause two million infections in the United States and are responsible for 23 000 deaths each year.
Representatives from more than 150 companies and organizations attended the forum, including those from major healthcare systems, medical and scientific societies, agricultural concerns, food processors and retailers, and animal drug companies.
