Sean Vesey was the lead laparascopic prostate cancer surgeon in Merseyside, England, at the time of his premature retirement at the age of 58 in 2012. Having completed his basic surgical training in his native Ireland between 1979 and 1984, he came to work England in 1984 at the Institute of Urology hospitals in London, after which he continued his specialist training in Taunton and Bristol. He was appointed senior registrar to the Merseyside rotation in 1988, where he honed his skills until he was appointed consultant urologist at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital in 1991.

He set up the urology services in Southport and Ormskirk, where he worked singlehandedly as a consultant for five years, covering all aspects of the specialty, a role that would have been inconceivable for most surgeons.
