Sylvia Ann Marletta (née Campopiano) was born in Bellshill, Lanarkshire. She was the first child of Frank Campopiano, an Italian settled in Shotts, who ran an ice cream business. Sylvia attended St Patrick’s primary school, Shotts, then Elmwood School for Girls, Bothwell, before going on to study medicine at the University of Edinburgh.
After house jobs and training in Edinburgh, she moved briefly into general practice in Shotts before focusing her medical career on geriatric medicine. She worked chiefly in Law Hospital and Roadmeetings Hospital, Carluke, and latterly in Hairmyres Hospital, East …
