Anne Appleton (née McCarthy) did house jobs in Bishop Auckland in County Durham and at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne. She then spent her early career in academic and NHS histopathology in Newcastle, alongside a five year period as a volunteer police surgeon for Northumbria Police Force. In 1996 she was awarded a PhD by the University of Newcastle upon Tyne for her work on the pathology and clinical manifestation of graft versus host disease. …
