Re: Private practice is unethical—and doctors should give it up

An article which is fairly typical of the left-leaning BMJ: Socialized medicine: good. Private medicine: bad. End of discussion, nothing to see here folks!

Like all occupations, medical practice provides a range of options to its participants. Some will wish to secure their, and their family's, future by undertaking better remunerated work, as reward and in exchange for the many years of training, onerous re-certification, insurance requirements and the often suboptimal working conditions in public hospitals.

One presumes that no one forced Dr Dean into private practice, when it suited, self-interest prevailed.

Why this is now a source of apparent self-reproach or guilt can only be properly explained by the author. However, claiming private medicine is unethical is a bit rich, not to mention hypocritical.

Maybe Dr Dean should report himself to the GMC for review of his registration, and thus soothe his conscience.
