Alasdair was genetically and emotionally Scottish, so the calamity of being born and brought up in England was rapidly rectified by bolting to medical school in St Andrews. His future identity was established and, among other things, he happened upon his first Irish Setter. A brief early flirtation with travel took him to Manchester for his clinical years and to Canada for the summers, where he met Joan.
