Donald Arthur Edward Mowat was born in Caithness, the youngest of the six children of William and Mary Mowat of Lybster. Theirs was a military and business family: Donald followed his two older sisters to medical school and met his future wife, Eileen, a native of Montrose, at Aberdeen University.
