New US rules ban aggressive debt collection by charitable hospitals

Charitable hospitals that engage in aggressive billing and debt collection practices can lose their tax exempt status under final rules announced by the US Department of the Treasury on 29 December. The rules1 were mandated by a provision of the 2010 Affordable Care Act.
