Half of over 75s in US are taking cholesterol lowering drugs, report says

Nearly half (48%) of all US adults aged 75 or older are taking cholesterol lowering drugs, says a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics.1 However, some professional groups have challenged the report’s conclusion that “there is extensive and consistent evidence supporting the use of cholesterol-lowering medication, especially statins, in addition to lifestyle changes, to treat lipid disorders and reduce atherosclerotic [cardiovascular disease] events.”
