Born and educated in Oxford, Alan Douglas Lower returned from the Middlesex Hospital after qualifying, to complete his house jobs in Oxford. After brief spells in general practice in Rugeley and Cambridgeshire, he joined a partnership in Stowmarket in 1961. He and his colleagues soon realised the value and benefits of working together and moved into the first health centre in Suffolk in 1972, bringing together all the primary health care team under one roof.
