Rapid Response:

The newly updated NICE guideline recommends that patients with a BMI above 35 and recent onset type 2 diabetes should be offered an assessment for bariatric surgery as long as they are also receiving or will receive assessment in a tier 3 service (or equivalent). Tier 3 services are not restricted to a tertiary setting, they may also be provided in the community with trained staff and appropriate facilities.
