Pork is UK’s main source of hepatitis E infection, briefing hears

Doctors should be more aware of the dangers of hepatitis E infection in patients who are immunocompromised as a result of cancer treatment or organ transplantation, a press briefing was told at the Science Media Centre in London on 11 November.

Infection with the hepatitis E virus is quite common but is often overlooked because in most patients it causes symptoms of jaundice that are transitory with no long term consequences. But in immunocompromised patients or those with existing liver damage it can persist and pose a serious threat to life.
