John Hedley Purser was the son of Margaret Ethel Purser and Derek Willie Purser, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon (Lancaster), who was a huge inspiration to him. He was educated at Sedbergh School, where he was awarded school colours in rugby and cricket, his two sporting passions.
He started at the University of Manchester’s medical school in 1971 and later did his preregistration jobs at Bolton General Hospital under G M Coulson and F Marriott. …
