Throughout his life, William Joseph O’Sullivan (“Bill”) had an unshakeable pride in and love of his homeland and, in particular, the county of Cork. He was one of four children, and his father was the local doctor in the village of Doneraile, which boasted the presence of three telephones—numbered one, two, and three—of which the doctor was three and the others the post office and the police, respectively. The outdoor life was the norm during his childhood, inculcating a love of animals, in particular horses, although all were included, to the point where a goat was permitted to share his bedroom.
