Alexander George Seaman (“Alex”) and his family moved to Norwich in 1928, where he attended the Norwich Grammar School (now the Norwich School). He qualified as a doctor in October 1941 from St Thomas’ Hospital, London, at the age of 23 years. During the war students were expected to qualify as soon as possible, and therefore any degree course was not completed until after the war.

The year after he qualified, Seaman devoted to house appointments, the first at the King Edward Memorial hospital, Ealing, as house physician to Dr Harman, a general physician on the consultant staff of St Thomas’ hospital with an interest in venerology.
