Schizophrenia is associated with increased rates of violence and suicide, Swedish study finds

Schizophrenia and related disorders are associated with substantially increased rates of violent offences, suicide, and premature mortality, a 38 year total population study in Sweden has found.1

The study, funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Swedish Research Council, tracked 24 297 patients who had schizophrenia and related disorders from January 1972 to December 2009. These were matched by age and sex to 485 950 people from the general population and to 26 357 unaffected sibling controls.
