Ashley John Miller (“John”) was educated at Cheltenham College and Barts, where sport, especially golf, and music were his main interests, both of which he excelled in and enjoyed all his life. He was a fourth generation doctor. His interest in orthopaedics began when working for Peter Ring in Redhill, and hip replacement became his special interest. He was senior registrar at St Mary’s, Paddington, and Northwick Park, where he was involved in the development of one of the first elbow prostheses in the early 1970s.
