Lesley Alison Margaret Evans (née Wills) intended a career in tropical medical research (her MSc was in medical parasitology), but family illness made it impractical to go abroad. She spent a year doing pathology in Oxford, then returned to clinical medicine, developing an interest in hospice and palliative care. She helped to set up and run a small Macmillan continuing care unit in West Sussex in the 1970s. …
