This excellent article puts a new and more realistic perspective onto the current panic about ageing. It is assumed by many that life expectancy will go on increasing. This takes no account of the different early life factors of the present generation of 80 and 90 year olds as compared with those of oncoming generations. Perhaps obesity, recreational drug use and overstressed lifestyles may reverse the trend.
