At 17 Jean Greenwood started nursing, having always been fascinated by all things medical. After six months, her father asked, ”Wouldn’t you rather be a doctor?” Of course she would, but she had to go to the local library to find out how. The war was on, and she had to take the exams by correspondence course to gain university entrance; she applied to every medical school in the country before finally gaining acceptance at Edinburgh.
