Although Somalia’s status as a failed state is well-known, Somalia’s status as a center for khat cultivation and addiction is not well-known. Khat is a highly addictive stimulant that derives from Catha edulis, a flowering plant native to East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Perhaps this explains why Somalia continues to be a failed state. Failed states should be re-defined as states of addiction. (1)
