Gaining the skills to be a competent surgeon is the ultimate goal for many medical students. But, as opportunities can be limited to practising suturing on banana skins or, if you are lucky, occasionally assisting in theatre by holding skin apart, it is a dream for most students.

And it will likely remain that way for some time; however, there are some innovative approaches being adapted to help us obtain experience in surgical skills.
