Indian Medical Association rejects call to prescribe generic drugs

The Indian Medical Association has said that it needs guarantees on the quality of generic forms of drugs before it could fully back a call from the Medical Council of India for doctors to prescribe generics whenever possible.
Clarifying the association’s stand, its honorary secretary general, Narendra Saini, said, “We do not oppose [the Medical Council of India]’s directive but want the government to put mechanisms in place that guarantee the quality of the generic drugs available in the market.”
